AI Marketing Strategy

What is positioning?

Positioning is the place your business occupies in a customer's mind relative to the alternatives — what you are for, who you are for, and why someone picks you. It is decided by what you exclude as much as by what you claim, and most small businesses have never made the decision deliberately.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test my positioning?

Finish this: for [who], we are the [what] that [why us], unlike [alternative]. If three competitors could fill in the same answers, you have a description rather than a position.

Why does positioning require turning work away?

Because a position that includes everybody positions you against nobody. Most weak positioning comes from an unwillingness to give anything up.

What can I not position on?

Quality, service, trust and professionalism. Every competitor claims them, so they distinguish nothing. Speed, a niche, a way of working, depth or a specific customer type all work.

How do I find my real position?

Look at the jobs you did best and enjoyed most last year, and read your reviews. Customers usually describe your actual position more accurately than your website does.

Want this looked at for your business?

Twenty minutes on the phone usually finds the one thing holding the number back. James answers himself.
