What you are actually assessing
Not whether they know more about marketing than you. They almost certainly do, and you cannot evaluate it directly.
You are assessing:
Specificity. Can they say what they would do, in month one, for your business.
Honesty about limits. Will they say what they cannot do, and what might go wrong.
Whether you can leave. Because that determines whether the work has to keep earning its place.
The questions
What would you do in month one? Named pages, named fixes, profile work. Vague answers mean a vague engagement.
Who does the work? The person in front of you, or an unnamed team. Both are legitimate; you should know which.
What do I own if I leave? Domain, hosting, Google Business Profile, ad account, analytics, content, email list. Anything less than all of it is a finding.
How will we know it worked? If the answer is traffic and rankings rather than enquiries and booked jobs, they are measuring the wrong thing.
What could go wrong? Every honest provider has real answers — a redesign losing rankings, seasonality, a competitor's activity.
What would make you tell me not to hire you? The most revealing question available. A provider with no such cases will sell to anyone.
Can I speak to a client in a similar trade? A phone call, not a logo wall.
The claims to walk away from
- Guaranteed rankings or guaranteed lead volume
- A proprietary method that cannot be explained
- First-page results promised in thirty days for competitive terms
- Reluctance to confirm you own your own accounts
- Pressure to sign today
Size, honestly
A large agency brings breadth and will put a junior on a small account. A single operator brings direct attention and a limited number of hours.
Neither is better. What matters is that the arrangement matches your size — a small local business is often better served by someone for whom it is a significant client.
Being local
Being in Houston is not itself a qualification. What matters is understanding that local search is driven by proximity, reviews and the Google Business Profile — and that one location cannot rank across the whole metro.
A provider promising metro-wide local pack visibility from a single address either does not know this or is not saying so.
What to bring
Rough numbers: enquiries last month, roughly where from, how many became jobs. Approximate is fine, and it makes every answer more specific.
The first call
Call James on 832-338-2926 and ask all seven questions. That is a reasonable use of a first conversation, and it costs nothing.
Frequently asked questions
What should I actually be assessing?
Whether they are specific about month one, whether they will state what they cannot do, and whether you can leave. Technical expertise is hard for you to evaluate and easy for them to claim.
What is the most revealing question?
What would make you tell me not to hire you. Every honest provider has cases they should decline; one with none will sell to anyone.
What claims should end the conversation?
Guaranteed rankings or lead volume, an unexplainable proprietary method, first-page results in thirty days for competitive terms, reluctance about account ownership, or pressure to sign today.
Does the agency need to be in Houston?
Being local is not itself a qualification. What matters is understanding that local rankings depend on proximity and reviews, and that one location cannot rank across a whole metro.
