The one-page plan
A marketing plan has to fit on one page or it does not get used. The version we build with Houston business owners has five sections:
- Who we sell to — one paragraph naming the specific customer type, neighborhood, and trigger that brings them to us
- The three best discovery channels — Google local pack, ChatGPT/Claude/Perplexity answers, referral systems — ranked by current contribution
- The lead capture stack — phone, web form, chat, in that order of priority
- The follow-up cadence — 5-minute response, 24-hour second touch, 7-day reactivation
- The three numbers we watch — lead volume by week, response time, close rate by source
How to fill it in
Step 1: write the customer paragraph from memory. If you cannot, the plan does not work yet.
Step 2: pull last quarter's customer list. Where did they come from? That is your channel mix. Throw out anything contributing under 5%.
Step 3: walk your own intake. Call your business right now from your phone. Time how long until you get a human. That is your response time.
Step 4: pick one thing to fix this quarter. Not three. One.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Why one page and not a full strategy deck?
- Plans that fit on one page get used. 30-page strategy decks get filed and forgotten. The discipline of fitting it on one page forces you to choose.
- How often should I review the plan?
- Monthly with James on a 30-minute call. Adjust at the channel level only; do not rebuild the plan more than once a quarter.
- What if I do not know my channel mix?
- Pull your last 30 customers and ask each one how they found you. The pattern emerges in about three hours of work. We help with this on the first call if useful.
- Do you charge for the planning call?
- No. The 20-minute call with James is free. If you want a longer working session, that bills hourly or rolls into the engagement.
